Burn out! It happens to everyone of us, wether you’re working a 9-5, have your own business, work part time, or area student we get a little burnt out at times and need to find ways to recharge and get back in the right headspace. Throughout the years I have had my fair share of burnt outs but have found different ways to overcome them to help me get back to where I need to be. Here are 5 tips I tried that you can try the next time you are burnt out.
- Give Yourself Some Down Time- This one may seem like a no brainer but when was the last time you gave yourself time to do nothing? To think about nothing? Or have given yourself a little much needed relax time by getting a massage or just staying at home to binge watch a show while you give yourself a facial, do your nails at home while drinking your favorite wine. Giving yourself some time to relax, lose track of time and to show yourself some self love is a reminder that you are one person and when you are running on E you never perform your best. Remind yourself that everything will get done but you need to make sure #1 has a full tank of new gas to be able to do so.
2. Meet up with a Friend- Odds are you have friends in your group that have a similar career path like you and others who don’t and who may be at the same stage of life as you or aren’t. Where I am going with this is that talking to a friend is always a breath of fresh as you get to check in with them, hear what is happening in their lives, get inspired to try something new or learn something new. All things that can help recharge you and help get you out of your burn out stage for a very low cost. Often when I meet with my friends (we are all young adults now) I tend to leave with something I might not have begun to think for myself yet, like buying a house, a new restaurant in town I haven’t tried, planning my next vacation, etc. Often times than not you know who are these people who can reenergize you with just one get together and they are who can also help you get out of your burnt out stage.
3. Visit a Museum- I LOVE going to museums! It is something that is ingrained in me because growing up my mom would always take us to museums any chance she got. And if you live in St. Louis all if not almost all museums here are free! Another very affordable or even free way to get out of being burnt out is to go see art. People create such different things and it is all inspiring to think that these people have dedicated their lives to this and probably also were burnt out at times but found a way to keep pursing what they loved, because they were able to get out of that stage. So visit a museum and if I may suggest one myself, visit the Contemporary Art Museum. This is not traditional art and may be what you need.
4. Revisit the Why to Goals- A lot of times while we are doing what we are doing we often forget the why to it and sometimes just revisiting that can be enough to get out of the burnt out stage and back on track. Are your working towards a manger role because you want to make more money to retire early? Are you working towards a dream vacation? Or are you working to help pay off those loans so you can live a debt free life? Whatever the why may be to your reason, be sure to have it so you always know what your life will be like once you get there. Imagine yourself in tat place, how you feel, all that you have accomplished and what may no longer be on your plate at this time. And if you don’t have a why, get you one!
5. Travel- I placed this one last because I feel like this is the one everyone tends to think of first when you are feeling burnt out but I know it can be a little more expensive compared to the rest that are either free or fairly cheap. But traveling also doesn’t mean going to an island, it can be going home for the weekend to visit your parents, visiting a friend from college that you haven’t seen in a while or revisiting a place that you know always makes you happy. Wherever you travel, take this time to disconnect, lose track of time, observe your surrounding and just be in the moment. Often times than not traveling helps give you that headspace you needed to get out of being burnt out and return ready to continue to go at it.
I hope these tips can help you the next time you’re feeling burnt out and are looking to get out of that rut!
