Now that we are in different weather and have officially rotated our closets you may be stuck with a few pieces you love but may may want to add a little more omff to. For me that one piece is my denim jacket. And as someone who is trying to be a little more eco friendly and not buy something new every time I want something new, this is something that I am implementing myself. You can very easily upcycle a denim jacket by fully committing and changing it up or have a small commitment like me if you only have 1 jacket and add something to it that can easily be removed like my pins in the jacket above.
If you’re looking to upcycle your denim jacket or just find new ways to make it look anything but plain, here are my 5 tips on how you can.
- Paint- Some of the coolest upcycled denim jackets I have seen have had a custom paint job. Now it may sound like I am describing a car but I’m not. Painting your jacket or hiring someone that can is one of the best ways to turn a denim jacket from a plain one to a statement maker and depending on what you may want their are tons of small business owners or artist who do this and can help you create a design for for jacket that is as unique as you are.
Here is an Instagram account that I have been following that makes the best paint jobs on just about anything: https://www.instagram.com/thelaurenschneider/
2. Pins – If you aren’t looking to fully commit or only have 1 jacket like I do or want the flexibility to switch things up without having to own several jackets, here’s how. Buy pins! You can add as many as you want, switch up the order, take some off, and go back to having a regular jacket if you don’t think it matches your outfit.
3. Sew/Embroidery- Consider adding embroidery or sewing something onto your denim jacket. It can be as small as you initials or as big as sewing on a huge patch on the back. I have seen the sewing on pearls to your denim jacket as a big trend and one that can be done for $8 or less. Just another way to make something feel like it is one of a kind and made for you.
4. Cut- Ever want a jean vest? How about cutting the denim jacket you already have and saving the extra money! Or combine #3 & #4 on this list and cut a section/piece of your jacket to add somethign on to replace that space on there. Or how about you make your jacket look a little distressed by cutting it up a little? The possibilities with scissors are endless!
5. Patches- Similar to #3 on this list, you can add small like patches to your jacket that make it unique to you. And for this you can go simple and only add one or a few or go crazy and just cover your denim jacket with all the patches!
If you are looking to upcycle your denim jacket or any piece of clothing you are still wanting to keep, I hope this has helped and you can find joy in an old piece once again.
