Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is my favorite holiday that is celebrated in my culture because we get to remember and honor those who came before us. This holiday has become so much more special to me in the past 10 years because of the people I have on my altar that I wait to visit me every year.
If you are wondering what Dia de los Muertos is it is a Mexican holiday in which we celebrate those who have passed and we believe it is the one day they can come back to visit us. I would actually recommend seeing the movie Coco, it does a great job explaining the cultural traditions.
Since Dia de los Muertos is tomorrow (Nov 2) I wanted a little altar inspo in case you wanted to recreate on yourself. You honestly don’t need anything fancy just a few things :
-Their picture (so they can pass over to visit)
-A favorite food or drink they may have enjoyed
-Flowers
-Any decorations you may have
This year was extra special because my mom and aunt helped me set it up and I added the finishing touches by adding some treats for them for when they come and visit.
Here’s my final altar and now I am ready for them to visit and to celebrate their lives. Chris and I have the tradition of talking about them and having a drink or treat they might have enjoyed and cheering to them!
I hope this helps and if you make an altar please be sure to send it to me!
PS- Here’s my day of the dead look for this year, creating this every year has become such a fun tradition.
